Welcome to Squatting Taiwan, a website and blog about my adventures in Taiwan. I’m a software engineer from the San Francisco Bay Area. I started learning Mandarin a decade ago, mainly as an extension to my martial arts activities and interest in Chinese culture. As I was learning traditional Chinese, Taiwan had a natural appeal.
Since then I have travelled to Taiwan twice for vacation and most recently for three months (business trip), made many Taiwanese friends and became conversational in Mandarin.
Taiwan is an exceptional place with wonderful things to offer with unparalleled convenience, a rich culture, amazingly friendly and kind people, freedom and safety. I sometimes feel that Taiwan is like a huge Disneyland – so much fun to be had, so many different things to see within a relatively small territory, all in a safe and happy environment.
What Taiwan taught me is that happiness is normal. It’s part of daily life and is the most natural thing.
Did I mention I like to squat in random places?
